I have glimpsed the mouth of Hell.

I have felt the soft whooshing sound as the demon casually attempted to Hoover my soul from its moorings, stab my very anima with the rusty ice pick of lethargy and small cash prizes, lower the collective social vibration to that of a small tree fungus atrophying somewhere in the rain forests of Peru.

I have been to the Strip in Reno, Nev. Recently. It is, by almost every account, one of the more pure, time-tested rings of Hell. Las Vegas has gone family, upscale, almost cool, fancy billion-dollar hotels and superlative entertainment and passably edible food, a huge array of inane excess. The Strip in Reno, by contrast, attained 1974 and stopped dead.

But there are, of course, levels to Hell. Floors. Decks. Stratum. I have stayed overnight in the Sands Regency hotel in Reno. The Sands, too, is a strata of Hell -- lower, deeper, more sinister and sad, all rank beer and stale cigarette smoke and mysterious carpet stains, and to the two sweet, sad, newly arrived Polish girls working the drab counter at the mini Pizza Hut off in the corner of the lobby, I wish you so much luck, and love -- and please know, that ain't America.

Is this as low as it gets? Is the Sands Hell's inner sanctum? Because maybe you think it would be enough. Maybe you think this might be a sufficient dosage of sticky tackiness for anyone to endure.

You would be wrong.

There is yet another. There is a Hell inside the Hell inside the Hell. I have seen it.

Here is how you get there: Just past the Sands check-in counter and the chirping screaming banks of video-poker machines and "I Love Lucy" video slots by the rickety parking-garage elevator and just over there on your left, there it is, you see it, this opening, this short passageway, this gaping maw of beckoning neon and drifting smoke and quiet rashy death.

You wander near. You tentatively enter the passage. You look down toward the end and see a large cluster of people, maybe 50 or more, sitting in rows, facing away from the entranceway, heads bowed, silent.

They are all middle aged or above. They are all hunched. Pale and detached and wilting and otherworldly. They are all locked in deep concentration/lethargy, and it's apparent that their copious bodies have long ago admitted defeat and their spines have long given up strength or flexibility or anything resembling verticality.

There is almost no movement whatsoever. There almost is no sound. There is an overwhelming sense of stasis, an interminable sinking, like lukewarm pudding, like spiritual quicksand. On the left is a raised platform upon which sits a hooked woman, emaciated and alone, a long-necked microphone arcing up from the podium toward her mouth. She leans in, and in that muffled, hospital-room PA sound, you hear it, like someone dropping a large bag of sand on a small penguin, slowly.

"B-27."

Oh yes. It is the bingo room. In the Sands. In Reno. You have found it. It has found you. You feel the whooshing. The tug of the demon. And it is wrong on levels you never even knew existed.

"N-15."

No one moves. Three grayish heads twitch slightly, someone shifts in her seat, you hear a phlegmy cough off in the corner. The ceiling is low and discolored. There are no windows. There are no plants or soft lighting or traces of tasteful decor. No one shouts "Bingo!" and stands up and does a little dance. No one laughs or smiles or chats or even looks up. There is much smoking. There is much sitting. There is very little else.

"H-14."

You can go no further. You can only watch. Hell inside Hell inside Hell. It is like nothing you have ever seen or ever want to see again and it pulls at this deep part of your psyche, yanks you close and squints its eyes and looks at you intensely and says, See? Do you see?

Here is your metaphor. Here is your ideal and painfully real analogy. The dank and stained bingo room in the Sands, in Reno. This is exactly what is happening in this country. This is what we have become.
This room, this mind-set, it is devoid of sunlight or beauty or nuanced thought, a breeding ground of catatonia and intellectual anesthesia and careening obesity and a weird sense of hopelessness, of defeat, and you want to shrug it all off and let it be and remember that just because it's not your thing doesn't mean it's necessarily evil or malevolent or karmically debilitating. But you can't. It just won't let you.

Because it is but a short little spiritual/psychological leap to note how we all have our bingo rooms and we all feel that soft whooshing, that sinister tug from the demons of mass cultural stasis and inertia and noxious television and poisonous junk food and Wal-Mart and BushCo squinting and trying to look all fierce and manly when he can't even pronounce the name of the latest country we're about to massacre.

The bingo room is in you, always. It is latent and cancerous and it is like "Everybody Loves Raymond" or born-again Christianity or the Olsen twins, weirdly tantalizing and notoriously toxic and yet part of you wants to succumb to its poisonous charms, its slow-motion heart attack, its river of Lethe.

Because in the bingo room, there is no pain. There is no suffering or political bickering or gutted school budgets or taxes or screaming breakups or bad sex or rampant lies about endless wars.

There is only the harmless shifting of numb buttock muscles, the marking of bingo cards, and of time. There are only the tiny but endlessly alluring cash prizes, the haze of menthol smoke, a makeshift community of lostness and decay and happy emphysemic stupor, that sinking feeling that it's all going to be over soon anyway so might as well just plop down and order another white zin and wait for your number to be called. Because it always comes.

The question is, are you going to succumb.

reasons why the english language can be problematic:

1) the bandage was wound around the wound.

2) the farm was used to produce produce.

3) the dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.

4) we must polish the polish furniture.

5) he could lead if he would get the lead out.

6) the soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

7) since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.

8) a bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.

9) when shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

10) i did not object to the object.

11) the insurance was invalid for the invalid.

12) there was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

13) they were too close to the door to close it.

14) the buck does funny things when the does are present. ??

15) a seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.

16) to help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.

17) the wind was too strong to wind the sail.

let's face it - english is a crazy language. there is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple.

english muffins weren't invented in england or french fries in france.

sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat.

we take english for granted.

but if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from guinea nor is it a pig.

and why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?

if the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth beeth?

one goose, 2 geese. so one moose, 2 meese? one index, 2 indices?

doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends, but not one amend. if you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them,

what do you call it?

if teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?

if a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

sometimes i think all the english speakers should be committed to anasylum for the verbally insane. in what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?

ship by truck and send cargo by ship?
have noses that run and feet that smell?
how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and
a wise guy are opposites?

park in the drive-way, drive on a parkway.
you have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

english was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all.

that is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

ps. - why doesn't "buick" rhyme with "quick?"

i really shouldn't be paying the extra money for hbo either, i only watch one show regularly. i don't care about sports, and those soaps, ie. sopranos, etc. i've never even watched them. but i can't resist bill maher's show. i need it for a dose of mental balance and stability in this world of what seems like increasing archaic fundamentalist fundamentalism approaching from all sides, top and bottom. nowhere else to hide.

in this week's show, maher said, "religion begins as childhood trauma and becomes mental neurosis in adulthood."

if i remember correctly, he went on to say the only cure is therapy. hah.

i will watch the repeat tonight and get his exact quote for all those millions out there who care and aren't casting lightning bolts at me.

...lately in oi tribe. where i been spending all my writing energies, lately, none really much worth writing down. things like ...

i can truthfully say i tried out christianity. i grew up in a christian household, nuclear family, 1960s style. i was born in 1959. for as early as i can remember we went to church every sunday morning, sometimes sunday evenings, and sometimes wednesdays just for good measure. this happened for me until i moved away from home, to school, at age 18. and mostly i enjoyed it at the time. so i can say i tried it out. i tried it on. i wore it. i lived it. i even enjoyed it. i very rarely questioned it because i respected my parents' wishes and followed their examples while i lived in their home.

but after i moved away i quickly learned there were other spiritualities and lifestyles available, requiring fewer, if any, strange ideas to swallow like -- blind leaps of faith. as the years progressed, i asked more questions, acquired more answers. those youthful leaps became little frog hops as time progressed and later, simply not needed. i discovered more logical and less ethically-stressful ways to find spiritual peace with myself.

i haven't leapt back yet. but there must be something going on back there in christian land because none of my dear old nuclear family, including those extended members, like aunties, uncles, cousins, etc., none that i know of, has hopped away like i did. thus, i remain the crazy one. and i'm so glad i did it every day i exist. now if i could just work out the rest of my problems...

i have this fantasy that maybe the seemingly easy act of drifting away had something to do with the sex pistols and all that. that's the world i eventually became part of after leaving home. it didn't take very long. thank god for punk rock. it did have it's own spirituality about it. things happen fast there. long live joey ramone. other lifestyles besides religious ones, do have values and rules to live by, even punk rock. because of that lifestyle, the social norms or "rules" were way more simplistic and darwinian, which was a good way to learn about the basics of surviving in the modern world on one's own, on the barest of luxurius necessities. it was a good and i learned a lot. i learned if one could survive that world, anything is possible. no need for assistance from higher powers. ok, i'll stop rambling now...sorry..

ohmygod. not another brain-warped spica story.

this began as a simple two-sentence reply and continues to grow like a frankenspica monster. sorry. i think i must be channeling some evil spirit, so please don't hate me. some of my best friends are christian. my family is christian. i'm not, any more. i have to say that so i won't get struck by lightning. thanks for the indulgence. my sunday school teacher got struck by lightning after he taught us a lesson one sunday morning, comparing humans to apes. no kidding. his body came to our funeral home after the event.

i always knew it was true after that. indeed, years later it was proved. humans and apes are basically the same species. it is a fact. god struck him down for telling the truth.

spending too much time in spicas also probably made some of us, me for sure, to think too many thoughts. some of those thoughts of mine deviated from the norm and questioned things many people don't take the time or don't dare to question. because they aren't stuck in a spica. hah. no, that's just a contemplation.

i'm not saying being in a spica made me a deviant freak. i already was that, i just didn't realize it yet. if anything it took me longer to realize who i really was because i was a spica-captive audience for those around me who pumped me full of their crazy platitudes. thankfully, for me that was long ago.

now, i generally don't decorate for and/or celebrate xmas. it doesn't make me sad any more. sometimes i do get sad for the people who are forced to endure it. i remember as a kid how i thought i could sense almost everyone pretending to be happier than they really were, just because it's xmas and supposed to be a happy time.

it seemed almost everyone involved would become more emotional and even depressed, even if just a bit, around that time and it's like evil or something to show that emotion, or even tell anyone else how you feel. it's not in the holiday spirit. later, after making the connection, i realized it's a christian holiday -- christmas - christian -- wow! duh. ok so i'm slow. now i realized why it's naturally got that fake happiness quality to it. that was always my main complaint about christianity, it is way too hippocritical for my tastes. just like its accompanying holiday, xmas.

i really started disliking it when i learned that santa didn't exist. not because of the commercial aspects, but because i realized it's such a pity that most parents in this slice of society have no choice but to lie to their kids. they fear deviating from the normal lies of the season and being looked down on by their peers for letting the secret of santa out too soon. heaven forbid. it makes a person wonder, what else is being lied about?

and then there's the commercialization. that's a whole different can of worms, but equally as imaginative in how it exploits religion to prey on it's faithful praying shoppers.

after i learned of the non-existance of santa, i later realized it was just a smaller variation of how the church is forced to continue its outdated myth about the existance of it's own saint -- god. it's the same thing, like an old polaroid photograph we remember from long ago. we know it exists because we think and we are told over and over it's in our memories. people treat the church and religion as parental units, symbols of authority, so they naturally believe whatever it tells them over and over as the gospel, whatever photos it creates in our impressionable childish memories. for the church to tell the truth about its own santa would mean it's own death.

the richest, most powerful organization on the planet, left without a purpose...no it won't stop spreading its own outdated mythology.

it is for the church's flocks, milling around, waiting for a clipping, to ask, "why are you pulling all that wool over my eyes?" it's time for those sheepish flocks to have a thought or two on their own.

god-santa, santa-god. makin' a list. checkin' it twice. just waitin' to see who's been naughty and who's been nice. it is like siamese twins. most times, if one can't exist than neither can the other -- can't be separated...santa/god, good old saint Nick.

that's my grand interpretation of life in a spica from the holiday perspective.

my grandma married a truck driver, years after her first husband, my grandfather, died. his name was harry. he drove an 18-wheeler for trans-con. he was hard-core trucker to the core, a teamster's union guy, big game elk hunter, etc. whenever he slept, his "clutch foot" pumped the pedal, the entire time he slept, habitually, every few seconds.

he was a great guy. he died of a heart attack, too much venison, coffee and cigarettes. but he was a great guy. he treated my grandma very well indeed.
