(Feb 2010 Update): Haloscan is no more. Therefore the comments on this blog are no more. Sad, but true. I'm not paying $12 a year for the occasional comment with Echo. Apologies to all those who have commented. I have saved them and may well stick them somewhere else at some point.

New Star Trek Movie!Could it be true? Yes it jolly well could be! There are rumours afoot in Tinsel Town that a "Kirk & Spock - The Younger Days" type movie is going to be made.... "Paramount is breathing life into its "Star Trek" franchise by setting "Mission: Impossible III" helmer J.J. Abrams to produce and direct the 11th "Trek" feature, aiming for a 2008 release. "Star Trek" has been Hollywood's most durable performer other than James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series. Decision to relaunch "Star Trek" comes less than a year after UPNUPN pulled the plug on "Star Trek: Enterprise""Star Trek: Enterprise" amid dismal ratings following a four-season run and four years after "Star Trek: Nemesis""Star Trek: Nemesis" turned in the worst performance of the 10 films with $43 million domestic. Original series created by Roddenberry launched in 1966 on NBC and ended in 1969. During the following decade, the original 78 episodes of "Trek" became staples in syndication and helped mobilize the fan base along with conventions, books and merchandise. Paramount released "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979 and saw domestic grosses hit $82 million. The next three films grossed a combined $263 million domestically, so Paramount started the second TV series, "The Next Generation," in 1987, with Rick Berman and Roddenberry co-exec producing." Of course, the question to the panel is - who should play Spock and Kirk? I reckon it should be Ant & Dec :)

Fringes Not Bangs!Sue refers to her hair fringe as "bangs". Eventually, I'd had enough - and went on the search for the Source of the Bangs!... The origin of bangs (the word is occasionally found in the singular bang), referring to a fringe of hair falling over the forehead (especially if cut square), is uncertain. A common explanation, and the most likely one, is that bang(s) is short for bangtail. A bangtail is a horse's tail trimmed horizontally, so that the tail has a flat, even end, and hence a horse having such a tail. (By the early twentieth century, bangtail was used generically for 'a racehorse'.) This leaves the question of the origin of bangtail. The word bang 'to strike violently' or 'a sudden striking blow or sound' has an adverbial sense 'suddenly; abruptly; completely; directly', as in "he walked bang up to me," "a slam-bang effort," or, closer for our purposes, "to cut (something) bang off." Our bangs is probably from this adverbial use, one way or another: either it comes directly from this adverb, or bangtail itself is from this adverb and bang(s) is short for bangtail. The adverbial bang is recorded in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, depending on how you interpret the evidence. Bangtailed '(of a horse) having a bangtail' is found in the early 1860s, and bang 'fringe of hair' is first found in the late 1870s in America. The source of this info was from this bored chap Brian Keffer - thanks Brian :)

Boro Beat Basel 4 - 1 !In true Roy Of The Rovers fashion Middlesbrough came back from the jaws of death to beat Basel in the quarter finals of the UEFA Cup. Following a 2 - 0 defeat in the hometown of Basel a few weeeks ago, Middlesbrough had it all to do with the return leg back in at the Riverside Stadium, in the North East of England. And it started off diastrously - with Basel scoring first. This meant that Basel were leading 1 - 0 on the night, and 3 - 0 on aggregrate. Middlesbrough needed 4 goals to win...... And boy did they do it! It started with Viduka banging in one in the 33rd minute. Half-time score on the night 1 - 1 ( 1 - 2 on ag. to Basel). It took until the 57th minute in the second half for Viduka, (again), to level the scores: 2 - 1 ( 2 - 2 on agg). But it was but Hasselbank's lightening, dipping, thundering rocket which really gave the Boro hope. The veteran forward picked up possession 25 yards out and unleashed a trademark thunderbolt into the top corner, leaving the keeper rooted to the spot. And what a nail-biting finish it was. In the last minute of normal time Boro sealed the most sensational of comebacks, Massimo Maccarone responding fired home from a tight angle and send the whole of The Riverside into raptures. I was also keeping my brother Dom updated with text messages as he was on hols in Florida - but I had to phone him in the last few seconds of the game. What a match. It's one of the best European games you'll see in a long time. An excellent performance for Boro. Roll on the semi- finals!

Bon Jovi: Cancelled!Yes, due to good old British workmanship yet again the Bon Jovi Concert Has Been Cancelled And Moved To Milton Keynes - the home of the concrete cows. Needless to say, we cannot make it up to Milton Keynes, and, like so many people, have had to have their tickets refunded. Oh yes, it's an Australian construction by the way!
